A Cone Jet-Finding Algorithm for Heavy-Ion Collisions at LHC Energies

چکیده
Standard jet finding techniques used in elementary particle collisions have not been successful in the high track density of heavy-ion collisions. This paper describes a modified cone-type jet finding algorithm developed for the complex environment of heavy-ion collisions. The primary modification to the algorithm is the evaluation and subtraction of the large background energy, arising from uncorrelated soft hadrons, in each collision. A detailed analysis of the background energy and its event-by-event fluctuations has been performed on simulated data, and a method developed to estimate the background energy inside the jet cone from the measured energy outside the cone on an event-by-event basis. The algorithm has been tested using Monte-Carlo simulations of Pb+Pb collisions at √ s = 5.5 TeV for the ALICE detector at the LHC. The algorithm can reconstruct jets with a transverse energy of 50 GeV and above with an energy resolution of ∼ 30%. PACS numbers: 25.75.Nq 13.87.Fh

Methods for Jet Studies with Three-particle Correlations
We present a method based on three-particle azimuthal correlation cumulants for the study of the interaction of jets with the medium produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC where jets cannot be reconstructed on an event-by-event basis with conventional jet finding algorithms. The method is specifically designed to distinguish a range of jet interaction mechanisms such as Mach cone emis...
متن کاملRadiative Energy Loss of Hard Parton Jet in Expanding Quark−gluon Fluid
The gluon radiation induced by multiple scattering of a hard parton in expanding quark-gluon plasma is investigated. The radiative energy loss of hard parton jet is shown to decrease considerably when angular size of extracted jet goes up, but the fraction of loss survives even for the reasonable wide cone of angles due to the coherent effects taking into account the rescattering of the radiate...
متن کاملJet Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions with Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the LHC
The status of CMS jet simulations and physics analysis in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet reconstruction and high-pT particle tracking in the high multiplicity environment of heavy ion collisions at the LHC using the CMS calorimetry and tracking system are described. The Monte Carlo tools used to simulate jet quenching are discussed.

Transverse momentum imbalance between a jet produced with a hard photon is considered as a signal of medium-induced partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We analyze photon-jet correlation in the context of a real experimental situation at the LHC, the problem of neutral pion background being discussed.
